3-5-2 Formation

Mode: Balanced / Attacking
Available in: FUT / Career Mode / Kick-off / Tournaments

Ideal for matches where you want control of midfield, two strikers up front, and defensive coverage from three central defenders.

The 3-5-2 is one of the most balanced and flexible three-at-the-back formations, combining defensive solidity with strong attacking options. It is structured with three central defenders, two wing-backs, three central midfielders, and two strikers. This setup offers midfield control, wide play through wing-backs, and a dual attacking threat up front.

The defensive midfielder provides stability in front of the backline, while two central midfielders manage tempo and support both phases of play. Wing-backs are critical, tasked with maintaining width, delivering crosses, and tracking back in defense. The two strikers work together to stretch defenses, create space, and finish chances, giving this formation more offensive variety compared to single-striker setups.

In FC and FUT, the 3-5-2 is highly effective for players who enjoy a balanced playstyle. It allows for dominance in midfield while still maintaining attacking options through the two strikers. With quick passing and overlapping wing-backs, this formation can overwhelm defenses and is especially dangerous in counter-attacks. Success relies on having tireless wing-backs and strikers who complement each other, one providing hold-up play and the other exploiting runs in behind.

Key Roles in the 3-5-2

Wing-backs are vital for width and transitions. The CDM shields the defense and distributes possession. Central midfielders balance creativity and defensive duties. The two strikers must complement each other with different attributes, such as strength and pace. Defenders must be strong in one-on-one situations and capable of covering space.

Preferred Team Play Styles

This system thrives with possession-oriented play, fast build-up, and counter-attacking strategies. Quick passing combinations through midfield, combined with overlapping wing-backs, create multiple attacking options.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros: strong midfield dominance, dual striker threat, defensive solidity with three center-backs. Cons: reliance on wing-backs, possible vulnerability to overloads in wide areas, and risk of being stretched against fast transitions.

Key Attributes for Success

Wing-backs: stamina, pace, crossing. CDM: tackling, positioning, passing. CMs: vision, composure, box-to-box ability. Strikers: finishing, positioning, complementary attributes (strength and speed). CBs: anticipation, tackling, aerial presence.

How to Counter the 3-5-2

Attack the wide areas to exploit the space left by advanced wing-backs. Formations like 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 can stretch the back three while overwhelming the midfield with numbers. High pressing also disrupts the CDM’s distribution and forces mistakes in buildup.

Suggested Counter Formations: 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2
